Guardiola Confirms He Will ‘Take a Break’ from Football After Manchester City Exit

Published on May 02, 2025

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that he will take a break from football once his current contract with Manchester City ends in 2027, clarifying that while he plans to step away temporarily, he is not retiring from football altogether.

In an interview with ESPN Brasil, the Manchester City manager said, “After my contract with City, I'm going to stop. I'm sure. I don't know if I'm going to retire, but I'm going to take a break.” His comments quickly drew attention, sparking speculation about his future at the Etihad.

Guardiola later addressed the topic again, telling Sky Sports, “I didn’t say I was leaving now or at the end of the season. If they sack me, then yes! But I said when I finish my time here, I will take a break. I’m not retired.”

The Spanish coach, widely considered one of the greatest football managers of all time, has transformed Manchester City since arriving in 2016. He has won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four EFL Cups, and most notably led the club to a historic treble in the 2022–23 season winning the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup in a single campaign.

Despite City trailing Liverpool in the current 2024–25 Premier League season, Guardiola remains focused on finishing strong. His team is still in contention for domestic honors, and the Catalan tactician continues to demand high standards from his players.

Reflecting on his legacy, Guardiola said, “I believe that the fans of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and City had fun watching my teams play.” The comment serves as a nod to his previous managerial stints where he also found immense success.

This isn’t the first time Pep Guardiola has considered a sabbatical. After leaving Barcelona in 2012, he took a year-long break before returning to management with Bayern Munich in 2013. A similar move post-City would allow him to recharge mentally and physically before deciding on his next challenge.

For now, Guardiola remains under contract until 2027 and is committed to the Manchester City project. His announcement suggests a pause in his coaching journey is inevitable but fans and clubs around the world will be eagerly awaiting his return.
