Madrid or Leverkusen? Xabi Alonso Urges Patience Amid Real Madrid Job Speculation

Published on May 02, 2025

Xabi Alonso has once again urged for calm and patience amid ongoing speculation linking him with the Real Madrid managerial job. The Bayer Leverkusen head coach, whose impressive work in the Bundesliga has elevated his reputation across Europe, remains tight-lipped on whether his future lies at the Santiago Bernabéu or in continuing his successful project in Germany.

“I have nothing new to say about my future,” Xabi Alonso said in a recent press conference. “The answer is the same: we must wait.”

Alonso is under contract with Leverkusen until 2026, but with Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti potentially stepping down at the end of the season possibly to take over the Brazil national teamn the Spanish tactician has emerged as a top candidate to take over in Madrid. Despite this, Alonso has consistently reiterated his commitment to his current club, showing no signs of being distracted by outside interest.

“Out of respect, I won’t comment on what’s going on at other clubs,” Alonso added. “Madrid are in a key phase of their season and so are we. The season isn’t over yet, so this isn’t the time. We must wait.”

Under Alonso’s leadership, Bayer Leverkusen have launched a serious Bundesliga title challenge and impressed in European competition with their aggressive pressing and fluid tactical setup. His success has caught the attention of La Liga giants and sparked debate among fans and pundits about whether he is ready to manage a club of Real Madrid’s stature.

Alonso’s experience as a former Real Madrid midfielder, Champions League winner, and key figure under managers like José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola has only added to the intrigue. However, he insists his priority is guiding Leverkusen through the final stretch of a historic campaign.

Back in Germany, Leverkusen’s management is preparing for either scenario: retaining their rising star or planning for a summer exit. Regardless of his next move, Alonso has made it clear that any final decision will come after the season concludes.

As the football world waits, one thing remains certain whether Xabi Alonso stays in the Bundesliga or returns to La Liga, his next step will be one of the most anticipated managerial decisions of the year.
