Chelsea have withdrawn from negotiations to sign AC Milan’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan and are running out of time to finalise a deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, with the Club World Cup squad deadline looming.
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea had placed a valuation of €10–15 million (£8.5–12.7 million) on Maignan, who has one year remaining on his Milan contract, after being offered the player by the Italian side (skysports.com). The Blues ultimately never submitted an official bid, citing their reluctance to exceed this valuation (skysports.com). Sky Sports chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol confirmed that the club “never made an official bid” and refused to stretch their offer further, especially given Maignan’s contract situation (skysports.com).
Sky Sports also reports that AC Milan sought around £25 million (€30 million) for the France international, a price the club deemed excessive given his short contract and current form . Without matching that valuation, Chelsea opted to abandon the pursuit and will rely on their existing goalkeeping roster, which includes Robert Sánchez, Filip Jørgensen, Djordje Petrovic, Mike Penders, and Kepa Arrizabalaga (skysports.com).
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s hopes of signing England U21 winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund have also stalled. Sky Sports states that Chelsea’s initial €35 million (around £29.5 million) offer was rejected, with Dortmund holding out for €50–60 million (skysports.com). Personal terms are said to be agreed, but the fee gap remains unresolved, and with the Club World Cup squad deadline set for Tuesday, a deal before then appears unlikely (skysports.com).
Sky in Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg explained that “too many things have to happen” for the Gittens transfer to complete in time, and emphasized that the current offer is too low compared to Dortmund’s demands (skysports.com).
Chelsea’s position on both deals highlights a firm valuation policy. The club’s unwillingness to pay over their benchmarks—despite the mounting deadline pressure—signals strong financial discipline. As a result, no new goalkeeper or winger is expected to be included in the upcoming Club World Cup squad.
That said, the summer transfer window reopens on June 16, presenting an opportunity for Chelsea to revisit both Maignan and Gittens if AC Milan or Dortmund show greater flexibility on price. In the meantime, the club may shift its focus toward reinforcing other areas of the squad or exploring alternatives in the post-deadline period.
