Tottenham Hotspur have made the shocking decision to part ways with Ange Postecoglou, just weeks after the Australian guided the club to a historic UEFA Europa League triumph. Despite breaking a 17-year trophy drought and securing Champions League football, Spurs have opted to move in a different direction—citing a disastrous domestic campaign as the catalyst.
From European Hero to Premier League Collapse
Postecoglou’s sacking comes as a surprise to many, particularly after he led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final, delivering the club its first European trophy since 1984. However, his Premier League record tells a different story. Spurs finished the 2024–25 season in 17th place, just narrowly avoiding relegation.
The club suffered 22 league defeats—the most of any team that stayed up—raising serious concerns about consistency, squad depth, and tactical rigidity.
Levy’s Ruthless Call and Financial Fallout
Chairman Daniel Levy, known for his no-nonsense approach to managerial decisions, reportedly made the call after internal reviews concluded that domestic form must not be sacrificed for European success. The sacking will cost the club an estimated £4 million in compensation, in addition to a £2 million Champions League bonus owed to Postecoglou.
The decision has split the fanbase. Some supporters believe Ange deserved another season to fix the domestic issues. Others argue his tactical approach became predictable and failed to evolve, even with European success.
Search for a New Manager Begins
Tottenham is now in active talks to find a new head coach. Thomas Frank, the current Brentford boss, is the leading candidate. His strong relationship with Spurs' technical director Johan Lange and a manageable £9 million release clause in his contract make him an attractive option.
Other names on the radar include:
Whoever takes over will be tasked with stabilizing the team domestically while building on the club’s newfound European momentum.
What's Next for Postecoglou?
Ange Postecoglou may not be out of work for long. Reports suggest he is being eyed for roles in both international football and Europe’s top leagues. Despite the unceremonious exit, he leaves North London having delivered silverware and restoring belief in attacking football at Spurs.
